Grow lights are used to help the houseplants grow stronger and healthier. They can even be used for indoor gardens, to produce herbs and vegetables, or to help flowering plants produce beautiful flowers all year. There are many different types of lights that can be used: incandescent, fluorescent and high intensity discharge (HID) bulbs. Each type of bulb emits a different color spectrum of light, that determine how a plant grows.
Bulbs incandescent
Incandescent bulbs emit red light, but very little blue light. They also emit a large amount of heat, so you have to be careful with how close they are to your plants. If the lamps are too close to your plants, can cause the plant to wilt. If you place your plant close to the bulbs, which actually can burn the leaves of the plant.
Fluorescent Bulbs
Fluorescent tubes are inexpensive and last longer than incandescent bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs produce a cold light either white or warm white light. The cold white light bulbs provide light blue and yellow-green, but no red light plants growing under these lights. Robust and can be stunted in growth. The warm white light bulbs provide a great red light, but very little blue and green light. If possible, one option is to use a cool white and warm white light bulb when the plants growth to give a good balance in the different colors of light they receive.
Another option is to use a full-spectrum fluorescent bulb. Each of these bulbs produce blue, green and red light to give the proper balance of colors, as that found in nature. These bulbs can be used for all plants.
High Intensity Discharge (HID) Bulbs
HID lamps are more expensive than fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, even. They consume less electricity, but usually have higher wattage, so it must have careful not to have too many of these lights are running on the same circuit breaker in your home. So who would use these lights? Well, commercial growers and serious gardeners in general, use since they emit more light than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs.
A type of HID bulb is the halogen lamp metal, a favorite of serious indoor gardeners. These bulbs emit a bluish-white light that plants love. Plants grown under metal halide bulb green, strong and very healthy. These bulbs do not cause the plant to turn to seeds or flowers often, so it is best to use for vegetables such as lettuce, herbs and other plants in the house of green leaf.
Another type of HID bulb is the high-pressure sodium light bulb. They emit a yellow-orange light, similar to that found in the fall. This light makes the plants produce seeds, flowers and fruits because they think it is near the end of the growing season. They work well for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and other flowering houseplants. However, it is good to use these lights all year round, as it will make the stems of the plants weak and vulnerable.
Since metal halide bulbs and lamps high pressure sodium emit different colors in the spectrum of light, you can use alone or in conjunction. If you use together, start metal halide lamps to encourage plants to grow. Once the seedlings have matured, you can change the bulb, high pressure sodium to encourage plants to produce vegetables or beautiful flowers.

Summer Bulbs
$4.48 Their names sound as exotic as the blossoms they produce - gloxinias, tigridias, sprekelias - and only begin to hint at the exciting world of color and fragrance that awaits those who venture beyond the local garden center's bins of tulips and daffodils. And while their names may not exactly roll off the tongue, tender bulbs share one key advantage of their better-known relatives: simplicity. Everything required to produce strikingly beautiful blooms comes in a convenient package just waiting for the proper conditions to grow and flourish, returning year after year, provided some basic conditions are met. Tender bulbs are tailor-made for the modern gardener who is always looking for something new to grow, yet who may lack the time or space to maintain elaborate flower beds. These bulbs thrive in containers and quickly fill small areas with a profusion of unusual and strikingly beautiful flowers. The text is accompanied by gorgeous and practical full-color photographs. |
